IPL Photofacial uses broad-spectrum pulsed light to selectively target melanin and hemoglobin — breaking down accumulated sun damage, age spots, freckles, and facial redness in the same session. Pigmented lesions typically "coffee ground" and flake off within 7–10 days; vascular redness fades over 1–2 weeks.

A single session produces visible clearing; a series of 3–6 sessions produces comprehensive, cumulative results that improve with each treatment. IPL is best suited for lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–III) and is one of the most effective treatments available for patients with significant sun damage or chronic facial redness.

The Process

Your IPL Treatment Timeline

Free Consultation + Skin Assessment

Fitzpatrick skin typing confirmed (IPL is for lighter skin tones). Treatment areas mapped. Avoid sun exposure for 2+ weeks before treatment.

Treatment Day (30–45 min)

Protective eyewear provided. Cooling gel applied. The IPL handpiece delivers pulses across the treatment area — most patients describe it as a quick rubber-band snap or heat flash per pulse.

Days 1–10 (Darkening & Flaking)

Pigmented spots typically darken (coffee-ground appearance) and begin flaking off over 7–10 days. This is expected and normal — it means the treatment is working. Light makeup can typically be worn after 24 hours.

Week 2 (Clearance Visible)

As the treated pigment flakes away, the underlying skin appears clearer and more even-toned. Redness improvements typically visible by week 2.

Series Sessions (Every 3–4 Weeks)

Each session addresses a new wave of pigment and vascular concerns. Results compound — each treatment builds on the clearance from the last.

Results: Most patients see visible pigment clearing within 2 weeks of their first session. A series of 3–6 sessions produces comprehensive clearance of accumulated sun damage and redness. Annual maintenance (1–2 sessions) preserves results.

On darker skin tones (IV–VI), the broad-spectrum light can affect surrounding melanin unpredictably, risking hyperpigmentation. We always confirm your Fitzpatrick type at consultation before proceeding. Patients with darker skin tones may be better suited for ClearLift laser or chemical peels.
