Treatment Comparison

Lip Filler vs. Lip Flip

Both enhance lips. One adds volume. One reveals what you already have. Here's how to choose — or combine both for the best result.

Lip filler and the Botox lip flip are the two most common ways to enhance lips without surgery — but they're very different treatments that solve different problems. Lip filler (hyaluronic acid dermal filler) adds volume, defines the lip border, and reshapes the cupid's bow. The lip flip (tiny tox injection above the upper lip) relaxes the muscles that curl the lip inward, revealing more pink tissue without adding volume.

At RELUXE, we guide patients toward the right option based on their anatomy and goals — and sometimes recommend both together for the most balanced, natural result. Neither requires significant recovery, and both are reversible.

When Lip Filler Is the Right Choice

If your goal is visibly fuller lips, more defined borders, a reshaped cupid's bow, or addressing significant volume loss, lip filler is the treatment you need. The lip flip cannot add volume — it only reveals what's already there. Filler gives you a result you can see in the mirror from across the room. At RELUXE, we use Juvéderm Volbella, Restylane Kysse, and RHA for lips — each with a different feel and spread pattern. Your injector chooses based on your anatomy and desired outcome.

When the Lip Flip Is the Right Choice

The lip flip is ideal for patients who want a subtle upper lip reveal — particularly if your upper lip disappears when you smile (common) or you have a slightly gummy smile. It uses 4–6 units of tox injected above the upper lip to relax the orbicularis oris muscle. The result is a slight curl upward, showing more pink tissue. It's a great option if you want a very subtle, natural improvement or aren't ready for filler. Cost: approximately $50–$80 at RELUXE pricing.

Why Not Both?

Many patients at RELUXE combine lip filler with a lip flip for the best result. Filler adds volume and shape; the flip reveals the top of the enhanced lip when smiling. Together, they create a balanced look that reads as natural and full from every angle. This combination is common among patients who want definition without looking "done." Your injector will let you know if your anatomy is a good candidate for the combo approach.

What About Swelling After Lip Filler?

Lip swelling after filler is normal and expected — it peaks in the first 24–48 hours and largely resolves by day 3–5. Final results are visible at 2 weeks. Most patients are comfortable in public after 24–48 hours (swelling is present but manageable). Bruising is possible but not universal — arnica or ice before/after can help. The lip flip has essentially no downtime since it's a small tox injection.

FAQs

Lip Filler vs. Lip Flip Questions

Both can look completely natural in the right hands with the right dose. A conservative 0.5–1 syringe of lip filler placed skillfully looks natural and full. The lip flip is inherently subtle since it doesn't add volume. The "overdone" look comes from too much filler, not filler itself.
