For patients who have built a solid skincare foundation and are ready to go further, SkinPen microneedling is the treatment our team recommends most. Here is what it is, what to expect, and how to know if you are ready.
When patients who love their facials or tox routine ask what they should try next, SkinPen microneedling is the most frequent answer from our team. It's not the flashiest treatment we offer, and that's part of why we recommend it so often. It works, the downtime is manageable, and it addresses concerns that monthly facials and wrinkle relaxers simply aren't designed to reach.
Texture irregularities, enlarged pores, fine lines that live in the surface of the skin, and mild acne scarring all require something that stimulates the skin from within rather than treating the surface. SkinPen does exactly that — and it does it with a precision and safety record that has earned it FDA clearance as the first microneedling device in its class.
If you've been consistent with your skincare routine and you're wondering what's actually going to move the needle on the concerns you've been maintaining, this article is for you.
SkinPen is the only FDA-cleared microneedling device on the market. Using a cartridge of fine, sterile needles, it creates thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin at a depth your provider calibrates based on your specific concerns. This triggers the skin's natural wound-healing response — meaning your body begins producing new collagen and elastin to repair and remodel the treated area.
The result, over the following weeks, is skin that becomes gradually firmer, smoother, and more refined in texture. It's not an overnight change. Collagen production takes time. But what many patients notice after their first session is a quality to their skin they hadn't seen before — a subtle firmness, cleaner pores, better light reflection. The improvement compounds with each session in your series.
Your provider will numb the treatment area with topical anesthetic for 20 to 30 minutes before starting, so the experience is much more comfortable than it sounds. Most patients describe it as a mild pressure and warmth sensation across the skin. The session itself typically takes 30 to 45 minutes.
SkinPen is particularly well-suited for patients with skin texture irregularities, enlarged or congested pores, fine lines in the surface of the skin, and mild acne scarring. If any of those describe the concerns you've been trying to address, it's worth a conversation.
It's also safe for all skin types and tones — one of its meaningful advantages over energy-based or light-based treatments, which carry more risk of discoloration in darker skin. Because SkinPen works mechanically rather than with heat or light, it can be performed year-round without the sun-sensitivity restrictions that some other treatments require.
It is not the right tool for significant skin laxity, deeper or more complex acne scarring, or patients who want meaningful tissue remodeling at a deeper level. For those concerns, Morpheus8 is a more appropriate conversation — and we'll explain the difference in a later section.
Most patients at RELUXE do a series of three SkinPen treatments, spaced four to six weeks apart. That spacing is intentional — it gives your skin time to move through its collagen production cycle before the next session builds on top of it. Stacking treatments too close together doesn't accelerate results; giving each session room to work is what creates the compounding improvement.
Many patients notice meaningful improvement after the first session. By the second, they're usually seeing clearer results in texture and pore appearance. The third session tends to consolidate and deepen those results. After completing a series, many patients do one or two maintenance sessions per year to sustain what they've built.
Your provider will customize the series plan based on your skin and goals. Patients with milder concerns may see strong results in two sessions; those with more significant texture or scarring may benefit from extending to four or more. Nothing is predetermined — it gets worked out based on how your skin responds.
This is one of the most important things to understand before booking: SkinPen's downtime is real but manageable. Most patients experience one to three days of redness — similar in appearance and sensation to a moderate sunburn. Some swelling and skin tightness are also normal in the first 24 to 48 hours. By day three or four, the visible redness has usually resolved and most patients feel comfortable without makeup.
For the first few days after treatment, you will be on a short list of restrictions: no active skincare ingredients like retinoids or acids, no direct sun exposure without SPF, no heavy exercise or sweating. These aren't arbitrary — they're what lets your skin repair properly so you get the results you came for. Your provider will walk you through the full aftercare protocol.
Most patients schedule their SkinPen appointment heading into a long weekend or a couple of quieter days. It's not the kind of treatment where you can go right back to a social event the same evening — but it's also far from the kind of visible recovery that some other treatments involve.
PRP — platelet-rich plasma — is an optional upgrade that pairs naturally with SkinPen. The process starts with a small blood draw, which is processed in a centrifuge to concentrate your own growth factors. That concentrated plasma is then applied to your skin during the microneedling treatment, allowing it to absorb through the micro-channels the SkinPen creates.
Adding PRP may help accelerate healing and amplify collagen production, which is why many patients with more significant acne scarring or those wanting to maximize their results choose to include it. At RELUXE, we call this combination the VAMP facial — it uses your body's own biology to enhance what the microneedling initiates.
PRP is not required, and many patients see strong results from SkinPen alone. Your provider will help you decide whether it makes sense for your goals and budget during your consultation.
We get asked this comparison often, and it's a fair question. Both SkinPen and Morpheus8 use microneedling — but they're doing different things and are appropriate for different patients.
SkinPen is traditional microneedling. It stimulates collagen through the controlled micro-injury process, working primarily in the upper layers of the skin. It's excellent for texture, pores, fine lines, and mild scarring. It has lighter downtime — typically one to three days — and is a less intensive commitment overall. It's where most patients start when they're ready to go beyond a facial routine.
Morpheus8 adds radiofrequency energy delivered through the needles, which heats tissue at a deeper level and drives more significant collagen remodeling and skin tightening. It's appropriate for patients with more advanced concerns — meaningful skin laxity, deeper acne scarring, or those who want results that go further than microneedling alone can deliver. The tradeoff is more preparation, more downtime (two to three days minimum), and a higher investment. It's a consultation-required treatment for a reason: the right candidate, settings, and plan all need to be worked out in person. If you're unsure which one is right for you, a free consultation is the simplest way to get a clear answer.
SkinPen is one of our more approachable treatments to get started with. Unlike Morpheus8, which we require a consultation for before booking, SkinPen is accessible enough that a consultation and same-day treatment are often possible for straightforward cases.
That said, we always recommend at least a brief provider conversation before your first series, particularly if you have active breakouts, a history of cold sores, or skin conditions that might affect how you respond to treatment. Our team will confirm candidacy, set expectations honestly, and customize your needle depth and series plan before your first session.
If you're curious about SkinPen and just want to ask questions before committing to anything, a free consultation is the right first step. There's no pressure and no obligation. You'll leave with a clearer sense of whether it's the right fit and what to expect.
