Treatment Comparison

IPL vs. Laser Hair Removal

Both use light energy. Both involve your skin. But IPL and laser hair removal treat completely different concerns — and confusing them leads to the wrong treatment. Here's the clear explanation.

The Bottom Line

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and laser hair removal are both light-based treatments — and that's where the similarity mostly ends. IPL Photofacial is a skin rejuvenation treatment that targets pigment, redness, and vascular irregularities on the face and body. Laser hair removal uses targeted laser energy to damage hair follicles and reduce hair growth in unwanted areas.

Both are available at RELUXE in Westfield and Carmel. Patients sometimes confuse them because both say "laser" or "light" — but they have different devices, different purposes, and different results. This guide explains both clearly so you can book the right one.

What IPL Actually Does

IPL Photofacial uses a broad spectrum of light wavelengths to target two things: melanin (causing brown spots, sun damage, and freckles to darken and flake off) and oxyhemoglobin (reducing visible redness, broken capillaries, and rosacea flushing). It's a skin tone and clarity treatment — not a hair removal treatment. After a series of 3–5 sessions, many patients see significantly clearer, more even skin with reduced sun damage and facial redness.

What Laser Hair Removal Actually Does

Laser hair removal uses a specific laser wavelength to target melanin in the hair follicle. The laser energy converts to heat, damaging the follicle and significantly reducing regrowth over time. It does not address skin tone, redness, or pigmentation on the skin surface — it targets the follicle beneath the skin. After 6–8 sessions, most patients see 70–90% reduction in hair in the treated area.

The Common Confusion — and Why It Matters

The confusion between IPL and laser hair removal is understandable — both use light energy on the skin. But booking the wrong one means not treating what you actually want. If you want clearer, more even skin tone, IPL Photofacial is the treatment. If you want to reduce or eliminate unwanted hair, laser hair removal is the treatment. If you want both, those are two separate appointments — and many patients at RELUXE do both as part of an overall skin plan.

Can You Do Both?

Yes — many patients receive IPL for facial skin rejuvenation and laser hair removal for the upper lip, underarms, or bikini area. They can be part of the same overall treatment plan at RELUXE. Your provider will simply schedule them as separate appointments, as the devices and protocols differ.

FAQs

IPL vs. Laser Hair Removal Questions

IPL devices are sometimes marketed for hair removal, but they are not as effective as dedicated laser hair removal systems for permanent reduction. At RELUXE, our IPL is used for skin rejuvenation (photofacial). For hair removal, we use dedicated laser technology that is significantly more effective for that purpose.
