Treatment Comparison

IPL vs. Laser Skin Treatment

Both use light energy to improve skin. But they're not the same thing. Here's a clear breakdown of IPL and laser treatments so you can choose the right one for your skin.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and laser treatments are both light-based therapies that improve skin tone, texture, and clarity — but they use different technology, treat different concerns, and carry different risk profiles. IPL uses a broad spectrum of light wavelengths to target multiple concerns at once. Lasers use a single, precise wavelength for more targeted or more aggressive treatment.

At RELUXE, we offer IPL Photofacial (for pigment, redness, and sun damage), ClearLift (non-ablative Q-switched laser for tone and texture), and CO₂ laser resurfacing (ablative, for significant texture, lines, and scars). Understanding the differences helps you choose the right treatment for your skin goals and tolerance for downtime.

IPL: The Broad-Spectrum Option

IPL Photofacial is the go-to treatment for sun damage, age spots, freckles, facial redness, and broken capillaries. Because it targets both pigment (melanin) and vascular concerns (oxyhemoglobin) in the same session, it's efficient for patients with multiple concerns on the surface of the skin. It's not ideal for patients with darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI) due to the risk of pigment changes.

Laser: More Targeted, More Power

Laser treatments use a single wavelength, giving your provider precise control over depth and energy. Non-ablative lasers like ClearLift rejuvenate without surface disruption — great for lunch-hour treatments with no visible downtime. Ablative lasers like CO₂ remove the outer skin layer for significant texture and line improvement, but require 7–14 days of healing. Laser choice depends entirely on your concern, skin type, and tolerance for downtime.

Which Is Right for You?

Choose IPL if your primary concerns are sun spots, redness, or broken capillaries, you have a lighter skin tone, and you want a multi-concern treatment with minimal downtime. Choose laser (ClearLift) if your concern is texture, dullness, or tone with zero downtime. Choose CO₂ laser if you have significant lines, acne scars, or texture that milder treatments haven't resolved and you can tolerate a recovery period.

FAQs

IPL vs. Laser Skin Treatment Questions

IPL uses a broad spectrum of light wavelengths to target multiple concerns simultaneously (pigment and redness). Lasers use a single wavelength for more targeted or deeper treatment. IPL is more like a "multi-tasker" — laser is more focused and powerful.
