Treatment Comparison

CO2 Laser vs. IPL

Both use energy to improve your skin. But CO2 laser and IPL are in completely different leagues when it comes to intensity, downtime, and what they actually treat. Here's the honest breakdown.

The Bottom Line

CO2 laser resurfacing and IPL Photofacial are both light-based skin treatments — but that's roughly where the similarities end. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) uses a broad spectrum of light to target surface pigment, redness, and broken capillaries with minimal downtime. CO2 laser uses a powerful ablative wavelength to vaporize damaged skin cells layer by layer, triggering deep resurfacing and significant collagen remodeling.

At RELUXE, we offer IPL at both our Westfield and Carmel locations. CO2 laser resurfacing is available at our Westfield location. Both treatments are performed by trained providers, but they serve very different patient needs. Understanding which one fits your concern, skin type, and available downtime is essential before booking.

When IPL Is the Right Choice

IPL Photofacial is the right choice when your primary concerns are sun damage, age spots, freckles, diffuse redness, rosacea, or broken capillaries. It's efficient — it targets both pigment and vascular concerns in a single session — and carries minimal downtime (1–3 days of mild redness, with spots darkening and flaking off over 7–10 days). It's the best starting point for patients with surface pigmentation and uneven tone who don't need significant resurfacing. A series of 3–5 sessions produces the most comprehensive improvement.

When CO2 Laser Is the Right Choice

CO2 laser resurfacing is the right choice when you have significant skin quality concerns that milder treatments cannot adequately address — deep wrinkles, acne scarring, texture damage, or severe sun damage. It delivers the most dramatic single-session result of any treatment at RELUXE, often achieving results that patients describe as transformative. The trade-off is meaningful downtime: 7–10+ days of healing, with raw skin for the first several days. CO2 is only available at our Westfield location.

What About Downtime?

This is the most important practical difference. IPL is a lunch-hour treatment — mild redness for a day or two, and you can return to work the next day with minimal visible evidence of treatment (spots may darken temporarily before flaking off). CO2 requires committed downtime. Most patients plan 7–10 days out of social circulation. The skin is raw and weeping for the first several days, then transitions through a peeling phase. This is not a weekend-procedure treatment.

Can You Do Both Over Time?

Yes — many patients use IPL for annual skin maintenance (sun damage, tone evenness, redness) and consider CO2 for deeper resurfacing when they're ready for the downtime and investment. Some patients start with IPL as their entry-level light treatment and progress to CO2 when their goals require more intensity. Your provider can create a multi-year skin care plan that sequences both appropriately.

FAQs

CO2 Laser vs. IPL Questions

IPL is usually the first choice for surface sun damage, age spots, and uneven pigmentation because it targets melanin directly with minimal downtime. CO2 can also address pigmentation but through a more aggressive resurfacing approach — better suited for patients with concurrent texture, line, or scar concerns that justify the downtime.
